Defying Expectations
Today, Payal is 20 years old, but her journey began long before she understood the weight of the choices she would one day have to make.
Growing up in Kolkata's Agrawali community, Payal was surrounded by a reality that many girls quietly accepted—a future tied to the flesh trade. It was not simply a possibility; it was an expectation. Yet even as a young girl, Payal carried a quiet determination within her and a hope that her life could be different.
That hope found a home at Ashaloy, Mahima's outreach center. What began as a place to learn soon became a refuge where she could dream freely, away from the pressures of her surroundings. There, she found encouragement, belonging, and people who believed in her potential.
The road was far from easy. As Payal grew older and chose to continue her education, the pressure to abandon her studies intensified. Financial hardship eventually forced her to pause her education for four years, and at times it seemed as though the future she longed for was slipping away.
But Mahima never gave up on her.
The team at Ashaloy stood beside her through every challenge—encouraging her, guiding her, and believing in her when circumstances made it difficult to believe in herself. With their support, Payal returned to school through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), and Mahima ensured that financial barriers would not stand in her way.
Completing Class 12 was more than an academic achievement. It was a powerful statement that her future would be defined by her own choices, not by the expectations placed upon her.
Along the way, Payal gained skills in spoken English and computer literacy, building confidence and preparing for employment. More importantly, she discovered her own strength and the possibility of a life filled with purpose.
Today, Payal works as a Program Assistant at Ashaloy—the very place that once nurtured her dreams. She now mentors younger children from backgrounds similar to her own, encouraging them to stay in school, believe in themselves, and imagine a different future.
Payal's story is one of courage, resilience, and transformation. Through education, mentorship, and unwavering support, she was able to choose dignity over compulsion and hope over limitation. Today, she is not only building a future for herself—she is helping the next generation believe that they can do the same.
